Survey Software - Carlson Software

Survey Case Study

Carlson mines DWG-compatible CAD engine to power application suite

Carlson Software, a leading provider of office and mobile solutions for the land surveying, civil engineering, mining and construction markets, joined the IntelliCAD Technology Consortium (ITC) in 2007 to add IntelliCAD as a robust, DWG-compatible CAD platform for its software application suite. Now Carlson customers have a choice between two CAD engines when purchasing Carlson software.

"The decision to participate in the ITC and port our applications to IntelliCAD was a very natural evolution for Carlson as it was consistent with our mission to provide independent, non-proprietary single-source solutions with the greatest degree of value to our customers," said David Carlson, Senior Vice President of Development for Carlson Software.

Carlson's software solutions offer extra efficiency and capability throughout the project life cycle: from initial data collection to design, through construction and machine control. Carlson is a leading independent developer of land surveying, civil engineering, construction and mining software. Within these markets, Carlson enjoys a reputation for technological innovation and is renowned for its customer service and support.

A straight forward project to support multiple CAD engines

When Carlson was founded in 1983, its surveying applications were based on Microsoft® MS-DOS®. The programs were ported to use Autodesk® AutoCAD® in 1989 and for the next 19 years, Carlson developed exclusively on the AutoCAD platform. Applications and customers were added consistently over the years until Carlson became one of the largest independent developers of Autodesk solutions.

As a result of their membership in the ITC, the Carlson 2009 product line supports both AutoCAD and IntelliCAD platforms with a single set of source code. IntelliCAD's support for DWG, along with a similar user-interface and programming interfaces made porting their existing source code very straightforward. It took less than six months to complete the port of over 2 million lines of C++ source code and approximately 500 LISP routines.

The addition of the IntelliCAD platform has been well received by Carlson customers, who have welcomed an alternative CAD choice.

Partnering with the IntelliCAD Technology Consortium

"If a user already has AutoCAD, they can work smoothly and effectively on that platform," states Carlson President and founder Bruce Carlson. "If they are looking for an alternative, effective and lower cost CAD, Carlson's 2009 product comes with IntelliCAD built in, ready to use for no extra cost."

Working closely with the ITC development team, Carlson makes use of the access to the IntelliCAD source code to help solve technical problems and add features, and is pleased to contribute the improvements back to the ITC community.

Open collaboration between the ITC and Carlson is proving to be a win-win for both organizations.
